Finch Naomi | A Family Home Renovation in Adelaide
From a home built for two to one designed for a growing family, Finch Naomi shows what’s possible when you love
where you live but need your home to grow with you.
When the owners of Finch Naomi first built their home together, it was just the two of them.
A few years later, life looked very different. Their family had grown to four, and the home that had once suited them perfectly no longer offered the space, connection or functionality they needed for everyday family life.
They considered moving, but there was one thing they didn’t want to give up — their location.
Rather than leave the home and neighbourhood they loved, they chose to extend.
Working with Finch Constructions, the existing house was reimagined to create a generous new open-plan living area while also making smarter use of the original footprint.
Today, it’s a home designed around the family they have become — and one they now say they’re never leaving.

FROM A HOME FOR TWO TO A HOME FOR FOUR
A skylight brings additional light into the heart of the extension, while expansive glazing at the rear connects the open-plan living area with the alfresco and garden beyond.
For the family, that connection has changed how the space works day to day and created a home better suited to both everyday life and entertaining.
“Our favourite features about the new build are probably all of the natural light.”

MAKING THE EXISTING HOME WORK HARDER
The Finch Naomi transformation wasn’t simply about adding more floor space.
Part of the renovation involved looking carefully at the existing home and finding opportunities to make the original rooms work harder.
The former dining room was transformed into a butler’s pantry, allowing the existing kitchen to remain in its original position while dramatically increasing the family’s storage, preparation and bench space.
As the homeowners explained, the change effectively doubled the size and functionality of their kitchen.
It’s a great example of what a considered home extension and renovation can achieve: combining new space with a smarter use of what’s already there rather than assuming everything needs to be replaced or relocated.
CAN YOU LIVE AT HOME DURING A RENOVATION?
It’s one of the questions families regularly ask us before beginning a renovation or extension.
For the Finch Naomi family, remaining at home was important — particularly with two young children, a dog, one parent working from home regularly and the other on maternity leave.
Despite having a very full household, they were able to continue living on site through most of the construction period.
“It didn’t impact our lives anywhere near as much as I thought it would.”
— Patrick Finch Naomi homeowner
Because Finch was constructing an extension, the build could be carefully staged.
The existing back door remained in place for much of the external works, allowing the family to continue using the original home while demolition, the new slab and framing progressed beyond it.
Power and water were maintained throughout the build, and the family only needed to move out for approximately five and a half weeks when the works reached the point where remaining at home was no longer practical.
Every project is different, and living on site won’t be suitable for every renovation. The scale of the works, services, access and individual household all need to be considered during planning.
But for Finch Naomi, careful staging made it possible for the family to remain in the home for far more of the build than they had initially expected.
“Even with two young kids here, it was still very comfortable”

COMMUNICATION THAT MADE THE PROCESS EASIER
For the homeowners, one of the things that stood out most about working with Finch was knowing what was happening and when.
With the family continuing to live alongside the works, clear communication became especially important.
Site supervisor Chris kept them informed about the construction program and which trades would be arriving, while Gabby and the office team remained available whenever they needed anything.
“The communication was amazing. We always felt like we knew what was going on.”
— Patrick, Finch Naomi homeowner
The clients described Chris as always being just a phone call away, with regular calls, texts and updates throughout construction.
That visibility helped make living through the build feel manageable rather than unpredictable.
And being on site also gave the family the opportunity to see their new home taking shape firsthand.
WATCHING THE EXTENSION COME TO LIFE
For the family, some of the most memorable moments were also some of the simplest.
They watched as the slab was poured, the frames went up and the scale of the new rooms gradually became real.
Their young son, Freddie, was particularly fascinated by the construction happening outside the window — especially when a team of trades arrived to pour the slab.
For his parents, seeing the plans they had imagined gradually become physical spaces became one of the most exciting parts of the renovation.
As they described it, “there was something special about leaving for the day and coming home to discover another major part of their future home had suddenly appeared”.
It’s a side of renovating that completion photographs alone can’t always capture.

“We always knew what was happening next — who was coming, what was being done and what to expect.”

THE FINCH RENOVATION EXPERIENCE
A finished renovation tells only part of the story.
Behind Finch Naomi were months of planning, decisions, conversations and collaboration between the homeowners and the Finch team.
And for these clients, the experience of getting there was just as important as the finished result.
“We honestly can’t fault the process, the outcome and the space that we’re living in now. It was amazing.”
— Georgia, Finch Naomi homeowner
Their perspective brings another dimension to the finished project — because prospective renovators aren’t only wondering what their home could look like.
They also want to know what it might actually feel like to live through the process.

A HOME THEY'RE NEVER LEAVING
When the Finch Naomi homeowners first realised their family needed more space, moving was a genuine option.
Instead, they chose to invest in the home and location they already loved.
The result is a house that has evolved with them — from the home they originally built as a couple to one designed around everyday life as a family of four.
When we returned for completion photography, the extension no longer felt like the newest part of the house.
It simply felt like home.
After once considering moving, the family now says they’re never leaving.
And perhaps the strongest endorsement came when we asked whether they would recommend Finch Constructions:
“I would definitely recommend Finch Constructions to other people. I think we already have, actually.”
— Georgia, Finch Naomi homeowner
For us, that says a lot about the success of both the renovation and the journey that created it.
