FEATURED CUSTOM HOME RENOVATION:

Home Renovation | Finch Prospect

"If these walls could talk, what tales they could tell...'

This home renovation in Prospect is one of our most cherished projects. As a 2023 HIA Finalist for the ‘Renovation/Addition Project $500k-750k,’ this transformation of a 1900s home has created a truly remarkable space.

Every home renovation tells a unique story, and this one holds special significance for its owners, Rhonda and Mike. The property, part of our #FinchProspect2 project, was once a dilapidated house built by the War Homes Commission over a century ago for soldiers returning from war. Rich in family history, the home was originally purchased by Rhonda’s grandfather, a returning soldier from both World Wars.

At Finch Constructions, our award-winning team had the privilege of working closely with Rhonda and Mike throughout the home renovation process. Renovating a century-old property requires skill and precision. From uncovering hidden fireplaces behind walls to using traditional bricklaying techniques, we worked to seamlessly blend the new with the original structure. Our team focused on preserving the home’s heritage while enhancing its functionality. The result is a home renovation that successfully honors both the exterior’s historical charm and the interior’s modern design.

Home Renovations Prospect

Rhonda’s family has a rich connection to this home, tracing back to her grandfather, the original purchaser. Raised here, like her father, Rhonda, her husband, and children now represent the third generation to call it home. Throughout the home renovation, our clients’ respect for the property’s history was always at the forefront. This included adding a rear extension, which blended seamlessly with the home’s heritage.

Upon entering the front door, the central hallway originally ended at a door to the laundry, with no view. However, the well-considered extension transformed the space, allowing us to “bring the garden inside.” This created a light-filled area that enhances the entire home. We kept the original arch in the hallway and matched it with a second, carefully crafted arch. This extended the hallway into the new addition, providing a timeless, classic touch. Now, when you open the front door, the view of the home and garden feels like a sanctuary, instantly evoking peace and joy.

“Every historical home has borne witness to many chapters of life. And that is certainty true for the homeowners, Rhonda and Mike”

“The retired homeowners wanted their home to grow with not only the two of them; but to traditionally grow for the next generations in their family.”

This home renovation creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the home with an updated floor plan, thoughtful palette, and spacious custom-made extension. The retired homeowners wanted a space that could grow with them and future generations. Keeping this in mind, we transformed the home into a comfortable, safe and secure environment for all.

The original single-story home had narrow doorways, so widening the entrances became essential for wheelchair accessibility. Additionally, we added a new door to the main bathroom from the couple’s master bedroom, converting it into an ensuite for easier access.

A particularly exciting moment in this home renovation was rediscovering an original fireplace in Rhonda’s childhood bedroom. When Rhonda asked us to fix a shelf, we uncovered a beautifully ornate fireplace hidden behind the gyprock. This hidden gem now serves as a stunning focal point in the home.

“If these walls could talk, what tales they could tell…”

In addition to maximising the internal layout, we also wanted to also enhance the sense of connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. A large sliding recessed window was installed into the end wall of this extension, creating a beautiful bench between the lounge and garden providing a natural connection to the outdoors. The bench now acts as a seat, a stage, a playground, and a social space for our clients extended growing family.

From thoughtful restorations to sympathetic and modern additions, it’s hard to decide what we love the most about this project.

This home in Adelaide’s suburbs was truly built to stand the test of time.
